Junior Entrepreneur Programme Update

Hi 5th Class!

So I have finished gathering all the evidence of the hard work you have put into the Junior Entrepreneur Programme this year, and I have it ready in a folder to post tomorrow morning. This folder showcases the work you have put in, up until school closure, and the team at JEP will judge what you have completed! Don't worry, we did not have to have the programme completed (as all schools closed), but the team at JEP wanted to have a look at what we completed up until the school closure. It was only when I spread out all the ideas, art, posters, etc. on my kitchen table, did I realise just how much you have completed as a class. Well done to you all, I am very proud of you!

Here are a few pictures of what I am sending away tomorrow, and I have also included the video that our Story Telling Team had started (not finished.... yet!) for you to have a look at! I will email the JEP team the photos of your work throughout the year and this video too!

"Miss Mulholland, when can we finish and sell the Super Spinners?"
To be honest 5th class, I am not sure yet. I am talking to Mrs. Kirby to see can something be arranged for you to get an opportunity to finish and sell the spinners, so please be patient and we will try our very best to give you that chance. :)

Enjoy!!

Maths Help

A little video to revise subtraction of time - it may help with some tricky questions in your Master Your Maths.

I have also linked an excellent website - "Toolkit4Maths". There are many tools on this page which help with your mathematical thinking! One I spotted, which will certainly help with Activity No. 3 of this week's Maths Lesson, is an Interactive Hundred Square!

Project Update

Hi 5th class,

We only have a four day working week this week 5th class, as we would have been off on Friday 29th and Monday 1st June for the bank holiday.
Make sure to relax and take a break from the hard work you have been doing. We all need to recharge!

I originally set the date for your Local History Project as the 1st June, without taking the long weekend into consideration, so I have moved that date to Friday 5th June instead. Hopefully it'll give you an extra few days to complete it.

So far, I have heard about wonderful research online, some of you have already held interviews with relatives and friends, and I also heard about some photographers taking photos around the parish! :D

I have been doing a little research myself - this photograph might give a clue about our school's history!

Gramadach Gaeilge

This website relates to Activity No. 3 in your Gaeilge lesson this week, which should have been attached to the blog post.
The resource is not so much a "video", but give examples of Na Céimeanna Comparáide in a friendly way!
It uses flashcards to give examples of Na Céimeanna Comparáide and when you click the flashcard, it flips over to show you the translation.
Only the first few cards are for viewing without an account, but I have made one for us to use as a class.
Username: Fifthclass2020

Feel free to explore the Quizlet website too! Enjoy!

Suggested Work to Complete at Home (25th May - 29th May)

Hi 5th Class,

I hope you are all keeping safe, well and happy 5th class! Can you believe we are nearly in the month of June? It had me thinking of all the lovely things that would be happening in our school over these few months, and I am really missing seeing you all and hearing the craic from you every day.

Here is a menu of suggested work to complete this week. I have changed things around a little bit to shake up routine!

As said before, try to complete as much of the work assigned as you can, and please try your best to keep in contact with me by sending on pictures of completed work. Remember that I am recording what is being sent and providing feedback. I have received absolutely fabulous pieces of work already – keep it up!

Some of you send me pictures of your work daily, and others send pictures of all your week’s work at the end of the week. Both options suit me, as long as I can see what work you are completing as often as possible. It is just lovely to receive the work you complete at home!

As always, I have attached a Suggested Schedule of Work to help those who need a little bit of structure in their learning.

Maths
  • Master Your Maths – Two Weekly Tests only. Try to really test yourself, for example, put away any books or copies that might help you, just the way we do in school. Once you complete it, you can email me for answers, correct your work, and figure out the questions you mightn’t have got right.
  • Learning Tables x 2 – Daily practise orally or on Timestables.com
  • Lesson on this week’s topic: Number Theory (Attached below)

English
  • Spellings: Next spelling list (Attached below). Choose a spelling challenge from the Spell Well Activities to do every day, using as much words as possible from the list. Spell Well Activities attached below. This document can be printed and folded into a reusable book.
  • Free Writing: This can be completed in your copy or an Imagine Forest. Feel free to write about anything you would like! A story, report, procedure... your choice!
  • Lesson on this week’s topic: His First Flight/Oral Language History (Attached below)

Gaeilge
  • Litriú – Fill in and learn spellings – To be completed everyday as normal (Attached below)
  • Lesson on this week’s topic: An Aimsir (Tom Crean) (Attached below)
  • Foclóir agus Frásaí – I have attached the appropriate Foclóir agus Frásaí and recording for “Mé Féin”. This is not the theme that you are working on in this week’s lesson, but I would like you to read, listen and revise the foclóir agus frásaí for “Mé Féin”, for a fun assignment next week!

History
Our Local History – Project Work (Continuation from previous week)
Refer to last week’s blog post for shared expectations of Local History Project and for helpful resources.
This week, I have included additional websites to help with research of the history of your local area, and I have also included some help in terms of how to present your project.

Additional Websites
  • http://jbhall.clahs.ie/index.html

Options for Presentation
  • Essay
Type or write an essay style project. A great format for including as much information as possible. Don’t forget to include tables of contents and cover page.
  • Poster
A lovely format for including pieces of writing, pictures and diagrams. A good choice for those who enjoy the artistic element of a project.
  • Power Point
For those who might like to use technology. A great opportunity to practise typing and power point skills for second level education.
  • Prezi (Website, found online)
For those of you who would like a technological challenge! A beautiful and impressive way to present information.

Due Date: 1st June 2020 1 more week to complete
Marked out of 100 – 50/100 given to presentation; 50/100 given to information

It may not be easy during this time, but when we decide that we are going to think in positive thoughts, we might just have a positive effect on ourselves and others!
  • Attached to this blog post is an activity sheet that asks you to change negative thoughts into positive thoughts. Here is an example of one I have seen about the country’s lockdown - "I am not stuck at home, I am safe at home"
  • Our KiVa Programme! Feel free to make your way through the game! Remember your login and password should be found in your Homework Diary.

Poet's Corner

A small sample of the wonderful poems that have been sent my way so far this week. I can't wait to receive more!
Can you guess who has written each poem?
I love how these poems have followed a rhyming scheme, just like the poem we looked at this week - "Mr. Nobody".
Don't they have all have a lovely, musical rhythm to them?

A brilliant website that explains rhythm in poetry! This might help those who are a little bit stuck! :)

Two little announcements!

Hi 5th Class!

Just two little announcements for you!

1. The current 6th class will be appearing on RTÉ's Homeschool Hub tomorrow morning (Thursday, 21st May) at 11am! The Homeschool Hub are focusing on "filming" for the week, and will show "Say Something", an Anti-Bullying Video created by the current 6th class when they were in 4th class! Amazing work! :)

2. Our beautiful First Communion class who will be making their First Communion at a later date this year, would have made their communion around this time. This Saturday (23rd May) at 6:00pm, a special mass will be said for the children in 2nd class if you would like to join via webcam (click on link below). Remember how special your communion was to you?

Lastly, well done to those who have been sending me pictures of completed work from this week's assigned work already. It is wonderful to see you work so hard! If you would prefer to send pictures of your work at the end of the week, that also suits.
Keep it up! :)

5th Class Suggested Work to Complete at Home (18th May - 22nd May)

Hi 5th Class!

Here is a suggested list of work to complete this week. As always, there is no pressure to complete everything on this list, but try your best to – it will keep you on track with your learning.
Every week, I attach a Suggested Schedule of Work that suits the work for the week in question, (attached below) which might help to keep you organised.

It was great to hear from so many of you last week, 5th class! I know you are all working hard and learning at home, be it the work assigned or important life-skills! I am very proud of you all.

Maths
  • Master Your Maths – Since we have finished all the weeks in Master Your Maths, now you have a chance to catch up. Find any columns/days that you have not completed. Try to complete 4 this week. If you have completed all, you can move on to the Week Tests. Try two per week.
  • New work on Mangahigh (online – www.mangahigh.com) to complete – 1 task based on Measures. Please email me if you need your username and password (missmulholland2020@gmail.com)
  • Learning Tables x 12 (Oral practise or Timetables.com)
  • Lesson on this week’s topic: Weight (Attached below)

English
  • Spellings: Next spelling list (Attached below). Pick 10 challenging spellings and complete: 5 sentences and 5 definitions in your homework copy.
  • Handwriting: Complete one page of handwriting per week – don’t worry too much about filling the book. Remember, we only complete half of the book in 5th class and keep the other half for 6th class.
  • Lesson on this week’s topic: Mr. Nobody/Poetry (Attached below)

Gaeilge
  • Litriú – Fill in and learn spellings – To be completed everyday as normal (Attached below)
  • Lesson on this week’s topic: An Aimsir (Tom Crean) (Attached below)
  • I have attached the Foclóir agus Frasaí document and voice recording below to help you with pronounciation. (Both attached below)
  • Amhrán: Trasna na dTonnta (Tá an t-amhrán agus na focail ar fáil ar folensonline.ie)

History
Our Local History – Project Work
  • Compare maps of Kilkerley which are attached below, to this blog post. One is a recent Aerial Map of Kilkerley taken some time between 2005 and 2012, and the other is a Historical Map, recorded some time between 1837 and 1842! Nearly 200 years ago!
  • What do you spot on the two maps? Do you recognise any of the features on the map? Are there any differences between the two maps? What buildings can you see on the two maps? Have any buildings stayed the same? What man-made and natural features can you see on the map of Kilkerley? Natural features include streams, rivers, mountains, hills, etc. Man-made features include roads, buildings, railroads, etc. (See websites below for help)

  • In your SESE copy, make two lists.
  • 1. List the differences between the two maps – Recent Map versus Historic Map.
  • 2. List and draw the symbols that you can recognise and name on the map. (See websites below for help) What other map symbols do you know? Are any missing from both maps?

  • Create a project “Our Local History – Kilkerley Past and Present” (if you do not live in Kilkerley, or you would like to do your project on where your parents have grown up, that is no problem at all! You may have to change the name of the project). This is your opportunity to explore where you/they live/lived, finding out what has changed over time, including the buildings, homes and people who lived in the area. This project can include maps, interviews, drawings, essays, pictures – you can present this project in any way that you like.

Tips for researching your project:
  • Interview those around you – family members, neighbours (from a safe distance), telephone calls to grandparents. Ask about the past, the jobs that people did and ask about what is around you now.
  • Local history or geography books that you might have in your home. A fabulous resource that some of you might be lucky to have in your house is “Kilkerley in the Past and Present”, a book full of pictures of people who lived and still live in Kilkerley.
  • List of Websites to help with your research
Maps/Map symbols

People
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ (The census has gathered information about people over many hundreds of years – you might like to have a look at this website with a parent, as it can be hard to navigate!)

Stories
I found this very interesting! Enjoy! See can you find the stories from Kilkerley!
In the 1920’s and 1930’s, the government realised that Ireland was changing and was losing a lot of it's old ways and tales – so a nationwide project was set up! All children were asked to go out into their community and listen to and record stories from old neighbours/friends.

Marked out of 100 – 50/100 given to presentation; 50/100 given to information

Religion

  • Ball Trick Shot Challenge!
Have a look at the website below, and scroll down to the “Paper Ball Trick Shot Challenge”. I would like you to be as creative as you can with any ball (paper ball, football, softball) you have at home, and try this challenge outside! Remember – you aren’t scoring into a large area, try to use an empty bin, basin, or hat for your challenge. Practise makes perfect!

  • Make sure to video your creative trick shot if you can! I would love to post your trick shots on the blog by the end of the week!

Keep sending me your work, 5th class, as I am recording all that is sent. I also love seeing those who have engaged with our online platforms – Kahoot, Mangahigh, Imagine Forest and Khan Academy. You are doing a fabulous job, keep it up!

Corrections - 11th May - 15th May

Hi 5th Class!

Here are the corrections for this week's suggested work, in Maths, English and Gaeilge. Some items are hard to "correct" as they are based on your own choices/ideas/etc. Use this document to correct your work to the best of your ability, and if you have any questions, don't be afraid to email! :)

I have also created an End of Week Kahoot for you! This Kahoot includes questions about this week's work - let's see what you have learned! It is a brilliant way to revise, and jog your memory too. Enjoy!

Well done again on another fabulous week of work! Later on today, I will post a few pictures I received this week so that you can see what your classmates are getting up to! :)
Miss you all!

5th Class Suggested Work to Complete at Home (11th May - 15th May)

Hi 5th Class!

You are all working extremely hard at home, keep it up! It is wonderful to see emails come in with your hard work, pictures of everything you are getting up to and even some “hello”s!
Here is a suggested list of work to complete this week. As always, there is no pressure to complete everything on this list, but try your best to – it will keep you on track with your learning. Also, if you would prefer to continue working on a part of the work assigned in previous weeks, that is no problem.

Every week, I attach a Suggested Schedule of Work that suits the work for the week in question. (Attached below)
There is no pressure to follow this, although it might help those who like to follow a timetable, or add some structure to the day. A good idea is to print the Schedule and tick off the work as you complete it – this way you can keep track of the work you finish.

Maths
  • Master Your Maths – Since we have finished all the weeks in Master Your Maths, now you have a chance to catch up. Find any columns/days that you have not completed. Try to complete 4 this week. If you have completed all, you can move on to the Week Tests. Try two per week.
  • New work on Mangahigh (online – www.mangahigh.com) to complete – 1 task based on ordering fractions and decimals. Please email me if you need your username and password J (missmulholland2020@gmail.com)
  • Learning Tables x 11 (Oral practise or Timetables.com)
  • Lesson on this week’s topic: Fractions, Decimals and Percentages (Attached below)

English
  • Spellings: Next spelling list (Attached below). Pick 10 challenging spellings and complete: 5 sentences and 5 definitions in your homework copy. (Learn the spellings daily, although you do not have to do the writing element of this daily - only once is perfect!)
  • Handwriting: Complete one page of handwriting per week – don’t worry too much about filling the book. Remember, we only complete half of the book in 5th class and keep the other half for 6th class.
  • Lesson on this week’s topic: Report Writing/The Hat and the Superglue (Attached below)

Gaeilge
  • Litriú – Fill in and learn spellings – To be completed everyday as normal (Attached below)
  • Lesson on this week’s topic: An Aimsir (Attached below)
  • I have attached the Foclóir agus Frasaí document and voice recording below to help you with pronounciation. (Both attached below)
  • Amhrán: Trasna na dTonnta (Tá an t-amhrán agus na focail ar fáil ar folensonline.ie)

Art
Creatives Against Covid19
Artists from all over Ireland are creating posters for a campaign called “Creatives Against Covid19”. The artists are spreading hope and joy using art, during this difficult time for our country. The artists have now invited the children of Ireland to create their own poster or recreate a poster for the campaign!
I know there are some wonderful artists in 5th class who might like to take on this challenge. This is completely optional! I have attached the “brief”, which explains how you can participate if you would like to!
https://www.creativesagainstcovid19.com/

Music/History - Irish Traditional Music
  • Read: Small World History Pg. 38- 41
  • Listening activity
Have a listen to the following samples of Irish Music. No need to write anything, just enjoy!
  1. Trasna na dTonnta (Have a look at this week’s Gaeilge lesson to gain access to song on Folensonline.ie website)
  2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnktHY89gkY This is a video of local musician Zoe Conway (Alanna’s aunty!) playing a set of dance tunes on the fiddle, accompanied by the guitar.
  3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5Pyt8m5Ms0 Another clip from the fleadh, you can hear the button accordion accompanied by guitar.
  4.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtgQxf3nybA A video of famous musician Matt Molloy (one of my favourites!) on the flute, accompanied by The Chieftains.

Our Past and Today - The Famine

Hi 5th class,

I just wanted to bring your attention to a piece of news that I have spotted today, as it brought my mind back to November and our learning at that time!

Do you remember learning about the Great Irish Famine back in November? Do you remember we read about "The Long March" in your Up and Running (Pg.64) and we also had a look at Mrs. Kelly's picture book? We had wonderful discussions about how the Choctaw (farmers from South Eastern USA), who didn't have much to give, sent a gift to help the Irish during the famine.
"We have only little, but let us gather what we have and send it to Ireland".

Today, articles have appeared in the news about how Irish people are now "repaying a 173 year old favor" - WOW!

Long Division Revision!

A video that will help with long division, which we come across in our Master Your Maths this week!
If you would like any other videos on any of the topics you come across, just ask! :)

Also, if you find that you cannot download something that is attached to the blog posts, just email me and I will try to get it sent to you.

Another Maths question... how many times do I say "okay" in this video? :D
I might be getting too used to listening to my own voice! I miss hearing all of your voices in 5th class!

Keep safe,
Miss Mulholland

5th Class Suggested Work to Complete at Home (5th May - 8th May)

Hi 5th Class!

I hope you had a relaxing bank holiday weekend, and enjoyed the little bit of sun outside! Here is a list of suggested work to complete this week. As always, there is no pressure to finish all of this work. We all work and learn differently. If you find that you are not able to finish all of this work, that is okay. If you find that you need more to keep you busy – just email!

Also do not forget that you can email me to help you with any part of the work that might confuse you, or if you simply want to say hello.

Maths
  • Master Your Maths - To be completed everyday as normal (Week 30)
  • New work on Mangahigh (online – www.mangahigh.com) to complete – 1 task based on Directed Numbers (Using Negative Numbers). Please email me if you need your username and password (missmulholland2020@gmail.com)
  • Learning Tables x 10 (Oral practise or Timetables.com)
  • Lesson on this week’s topic: Directed Numbers (Attached below)

  • Lesson on this week’s topic: Report Writing/Famous Shipwrecks (Attached below)

Geography/Art:
Weekly Topic: Irish Mountains, Lakes and Rivers

  • Complete the Kahoot Quiz below to test your knowledge of last week’s topic: Ireland in the 16th and 17th Century (Some questions/information in this Kahoot might be new and challenging – try to solve the tricky questions using internet research – there is no time limit on this Kahoot, so you can take your time)

Game Pin: 05862925

  • Read Small World Geography/Science Pg. 18 – 22

  • Have a look at the three attached documents (Mountains and Rivers of Ireland – attached below) and websites below – some very interesting resources to help boost your knowledge of our Irish Landscape

https://www.osi.ie/education/schools-and-third-level/scales-and-maps/

  • Why not test yourself? https://www.ireland101.com/quiz/mountains-and-islands/

  • Outdoor Art Activity: From your garden (or maybe from an upstairs window) can you spot any mountains in the landscape? Can you see the peaks of any mountain ranges around Louth? Try to draw what you can see (you do not have to do this in your copy) and colour it using paint or whatever colours you might have at home. Use the links below to give you a few tips on how to draw a landscape and possibly a few creatures that you might find in the Irish countryside!

https://donconroy.com/

  • Using your mapping skills, and the website listed below, can you figure out what mountains you have captured in your artwork? What mountains/mountain ranges can be seen from Can you label the mountain/mountain ranges?
A little clue: Use a compass (can be found on smart phones or online) to find out which direction the mountains are in, compared to your location.
