Goodbye 5th Class!

Hi 5th Class!

This is just a little post to say a massive well done to all of you on a fantastic year completed in 5th class! In school and at home, you have put in so much work to further your own learning. You should be so so proud of yourselves, because I am!

It is almost impossible to believe the year has come to an end, and in such a strange way! You made me feel so welcome when I arrived knocking on the door back in November, and Mrs. Kelly was so proud to hand you over. I hope you have a fantastic year in 6th class - you have so many things to look forward to. I am certain that you will be the brilliant role models for the younger classes!

As some of you may know, I won't be returning to Kilkerley next year as I am hoping to teach in a different country next year! I am very sad about leaving the most wonderful school and the most beautiful children, but I am also excited! I will certainly be back to visit you all!

Here is a little video to sum up what you have been up to at home during the last few months (including the promised bake-off pictures and videos!), and some pictures from our year together! I hope you enjoy. :) Have a fantastic summer, and please stay safe!

All my love,
Miss Mulholland

Summer Book Club! Some Reading Recommendations...

Hi 5th class!

Below, I have written a list of books/series of books that you might like to explore over the summer months. Reading over the summer will keep that mind of yours sharp, and it can be wonderful to get lost in a good book! The books below include new books (just released), and not-so-new books (what my brothers and I used to read when we were younger!).

Some of these books might be a little scary or sad, so it would be a very good idea to ask a parent/guardian if they think the book is suitable for you. Just like movies, books can be scary or might not be appropriate for your age. Always check with a parent or guardian, before you want to read something that might give you a fright! I have put a little red star beside the books that you should double-check with a parent/guardian before reading, as they might make you jump!

Enjoy!

Harry Potter Series* (My absolute favourite series!) by J.K. Rowling
The Chronicles of Narnia Series* by C.S. Lewis
Darren Shan Series* by Darren O'Shaughnessy
Dork Diaries by Rachel Renee Russell
The Misadventures of Max Crumbly by Rachel Renee Russell
Skulduggery Pleasant* by Derek Landy
The Famous Five Series by Enid Blyton
Artemis Fowl Series by Eoin Colfer
Eragon* by Christopher Paolini
Skeleton Key* by Anthony Horowitz
A Series of Unfortunate Events* by Lemony Snicket
The Hunger Games Series* by Suzanne Collins
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
Wonder by R.J. Pallacio
Gangsta Granny by David Walliams

If you have a favourite book or book series that you absolutely loved, and you would like to share that book with us, please comment it below to share with all in 5th class! We would love to hear your recommendations too!

Don’t forget about the local library for easy access to many of your favourite books.

Kind regards,
Miss Mulholland

Our Final Week of 5th Class!

Hi 5th Class,

We did it! It is our final week of 5th class! Can you believe it? You have all worked so hard throughout this year, and you should be very proud of yourselves! Try to keep an eye on the blog over the last week for a few helpful posts and maybe a surprise or two!

We are one week away from summer! Summer can be such a fun time for everybody as the sun is shining and we can spend a lot of time outside! It is also a time where many accidents can happen in water, on the road or on the farm. So to finish off the school year, we are focusing on five areas of safety – keeping ourselves safe on the internet, in water, on the road, on the farm and keeping ourselves safe through hand hygiene/respiratory etiquette. These lessons are extremely important, so please engage with them as best as you can.

Keeping Ourselves Safe on the Internet
  • Watch “The Match”, found at the top of the webpage.
https://www.webwise.ie/teachers/myselfielesson3/
  • What emotions are Conor and Ryan feeling? Complete Worksheet 3.1 as you re-watch the video (attached to blog under “Cyberbullying Worksheets”).
  • Write a letter to the Problem Page in a magazine from Conor’s perspective or Ryan’s perspective (your choice!), on worksheet 3.2. Give your side of the story and then ask for advice on how best to resolve the bullying
  • Crack the Code! The hint is very helpful here... (Worksheet 3.3)
  • Watch The Match again with your parents and chat about what happened. Respond to your own previous letter, but this time, you are giving advice to Conor or Ryan (Worksheet 3.4). Maybe your parents can add to the advice you are giving.

Keeping Ourselves Safe in Water
  • PAWS Water Safety https://watersafety.ie/primary-school/
Under the Fifth and Sixth Class Section, click Presentation Paws: 4, and read the presentation.
  • After reading the presentation, click Online Interactive Resources (located below the presentation) in the Fifth and Sixth Class Section, and play a few games to test your knowledge!

Keeping Ourselves Safe on the Road
  • https://www.rsa.ie/en/RSA/Road-Safety/Campaigns/Current-road-safety-campaigns/Safe-Cross-Code/
Have fun with the Safe Cross Code Game above! Make sure to pick your correct age for the game.
  • Create a poster that would explain how to cross a road safely to a Junior Infant child. Remember, you must use simple and clear language, and lots of colourful pictures to help a Junior Infant child understand.

Keeping Ourselves Safe on the Farm
  • Explore the webpage below. There is lots of information on it, so it might be best to pick a few topics to read about at a time.
http://agrikids.ie/safety-circle.php
  • Can you see that the safety tips make the words “Farm Safety Circle”? This is very similar to an Acrostic Poem (where the first letter of every line spells out a word or message). Can you write an Acrostic Poem about how to stay safe on a farm? Have a look at the bottom of the blog post for a few examples of Acrostic Poems.

Keeping Ourselves Safe Through Hand Hygiene/Respiratory Etiquette
  • Watch the video attached below
https://www.atozkidsstuff.com/health.html
  • The Potato Experiment!
  • With help from an adult, peel a raw potato and cut it in two. Pass one potato section from one family member to another. Next, ask everybody to wash their hands. Then pass the second potato section from family member to family member. Place both potatoes in clear bags and label them "washed hands" and "unwashed hands".
  • Place the bags in a dark closet at room temperature. Leave them there for a few days. After a few days, pull the bags out and look at the potato pieces--don't take the potatoes out of the bags. What do you see on the pieces? Which potato has the most growth on it? When you are done looking at the potatoes seal the bags and throw them away. Feel free to upload pictures to Seesaw! I would love to see the results of the experiment.

Wellbeing
  • Wonders Cape App can be downloaded on all devices. World Wellbeing Week begins on the 22nd June. The Wonders Cape App contains lots of fun and engaging activities that may help with our wellbeing during this time.

As I said previously, keep an eye on the blog over the week for some fantastic book suggestions and maybe a little surprise or two! :)
Keep safe boys and girls!

Suggested Work to Complete at Home 15th June - 19th June

Hi 5th Class,

Can you believe how close we are to the summer holidays? You have been working incredible hard and have gained some amazing skills over the past few months – including how to learn from a distance! So we have two more weeks of hard work from home before the summer so please give it your very best effort!

This week we are focusing on keeping ourselves safe on the internet. Our safety online is even more important now, as we are all at home, and we are using the internet often - to learn from home, and also to communicate with friends. We have already explored some parts of the lesson in class during February and March, but it is important to revise what we have learned. Please engage with the lesson as best as you can.

Here is a menu of suggested work to complete for this week. As I have said before, try to complete as much of the work assigned as you can, and please try your best to keep in contact with me by sending on pictures of completed work on Seesaw or through email. I do not mind if this work is sent daily, or at the end of the week – whatever suits you best!

As always, I have attached a Suggested Schedule of Work to help those who need a little bit of structure in their learning.

Maths
  • Master Your Maths – Two Weekly Tests only. Try to really test yourself, for example, put away any books or copies that might help you, just the way we do in school. Once you complete it, you can email me for answers, correct your work, and figure out the questions you mightn’t have got right.
  • Learning Tables x 4  – Daily practise orally or on Timestables.com
  • Lesson on this week’s topic: Equations/Chance (Attached below)

English
  • Spellings: Next spelling list (Attached below). Choose a spelling challenge to do every day, using as much words as possible from the list. Spelling challenges attached below.
  • Lesson on this week’s topic: Said is DEAD (Attached below)

Gaeilge
  • Litriú – Fill in and learn spellings – To be completed everyday as normal (Attached below)
  • Lesson on this week’s topic: Caitheamh Aimsire (Attached below)
  • Foclóir agus Frásaí – Caitheamh Aimsire (Both word document and recording attached below)

Religion
  • Grow in Love: We are on Theme 9: We Are Called to Love and Serve the Church
Explore Lesson 2: The Sacrament of Holy Orders, with corresponding pages (from pg. 102) in your Grow in Love book.
To access videos, songs and activities, simply login on the www.growinlove.ie website with the following details:
Email:  trial@growinlove.ie
Password: growinlove

SPHE - Internet Safety
Lesson taken from Webwise.ie - full of resources for learning about Online Safety if you would like to explore further!
  • Let's get thinking about the internet and why we use it. It is a wonderful thing when used smartly! Fill out the "My Use of the Internet" worksheet (attached below), and if you would like, complete the interview on worksheet too.
  • Play the "Technology Through The Ages Quiz" with somebody at home (attached below) - the answers are directly below the questions, so you might want to cover the answers as you or somebody at home guesses! Feel free to read the answer after guessing.
  • Watch "Vicky's Party" (attached below). We have watched this video as a class already, but this is a chance to watch it at home and discuss the video and the following activity with a parent or guardian.
  • Siobhán's Conscience - In the video, "Vicky's Party", Siobhán decides to stay and check on Vicky. Can you give advice to Siobhán? What should she do? Write 3 tips/further actions for Siobhán in your copy.
A little reminder of the language we use when online, be it Snapchat/TikTok or any online platform. Here is an analogy we shared together back in March, Fifth Class – If I am not comfortable wearing it on my t-shirt or shouting it out loud in a room full of people, I shouldn't type it online.

The Great FIFTH CLASS Bake OFF
There has been so many fantastic entries to the Great Fifth Class Bake Off! During the week, I will post a video of all your fabulous creations, and a poll for you to vote for your favourite baked good! (No voting for yourself, silly!)
Watch this space!!!

Keep sending me your as much of your work as possible, 5th class, be it through Seesaw or email! You are doing a fabulous job, keep it up!

Maths Help! (Pie-charts)

Hi 5th Class!

The YouTube link below explains how to change the percentage of a pie-chart into degrees. It may help you with pg. 153 and pg. 154 of your Busy at Maths. Take note: when she finds 50% of 360 - she changes the 50% into a decimal (0.5) and multiplies that by 360. Notice how she writes a dot instead of a multiplication sign? That's ok - that is called a multiplication dot and means to multiply. That is a perfect solution!
We have practised finding this a different way - changing 50% into a fraction (1/2), then dividing by the bottom (360 divided by 2 = 180), and multiplying by the top (180 x 1 = 180). Both methods are perfect so feel free to explore that!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=95&v=QAArbrux1FI&feature=emb_logo

I have also linked a game to get your brain back into the fraction/percentage/decimal frame-of-mind!

https://www.mathgoodies.com/games/conversions

If you would like any more help with any of the Maths problems in your Busy at Maths, or your Master Your Maths, please don't hesitate to ask!

Seesaw!

Hi 5th Class,

Seesaw has been up and running for our class for 3 days now, and I am delighted with all the work I am receiving on it - from wonderful written activities, to pictures, to videos of your sports day challenges! Well done! I hope it is easy to use for you all. Any questions - I am only an email away. (missmulholland2020@gmail.com)

If you have still not accessed Seesaw, ask your parents to check for an email from myself. If they have not received one, feel free to email me, and I will explain what Seesaw is, and how to set it up.
If you are unable to set up Seesaw, please do not worry. I will continue to check my email as often as I can for your incoming work.

Lastly, I have already received some amazing local history projects - I am so excited to read and learn from more of you! If you would like to upload the project to Seesaw, that is perfect, or normal email is great too!

Hope you are all looking forward to our.. TWO virtual tours tomorrow! Have you guessed where we are going? Get that school tour lunch packed... you can't miss the best lunch of the year!

Sports Day/School Tour Week!

Hi 5th Class!

I hope you had a fabulous long weekend, and spent plenty of time out in the sun! I also hope you didn't forget your sun cream!

This week is a special week. If we were in school this week, we would have had our Sports Day and we also would have been going on our school tour on Friday! Unfortunately, they cannot happen as normal this year, but they can happen...virtually! This week, instead of the usual work assigned, I have given you tasks to complete for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and your Virtual School Tour will happen on Friday. The tasks I have given you might be clues to where our Virtual School Tour is
going to take place... See can you figure it out! Clue: We are going to a "Southern" continent... followed by some fun in a "Northern" continent... Can you think of a continent that has a North and South?

This week, we will also have a Virtual Sports Day, so have a look on the School Blog for details on how you can get involved! I would love to see your participation in Virtual Sports Day, by filling out the "Sports Day Planner" with your family and uploading it to Seesaw! :) The activities can be completed any time throughout the week.
Did you spot the Teacher's Virtual Sports Day Video? Mr. Loughran should have waited until my shoe was tied - how bold!

Now that Seesaw is up and running, it would be great if you could upload this week's completed work on Seesaw, instead of emailing it to me. (You might have to email me your Local History Project, that is okay! Reminder - Due on Friday!) If you need any help with Seesaw, don't hesitate to email me!

Your work for this week (Tuesday - Thursday) is as follows:
(No need to complete spellings, MYM, tables, etc. Only complete what is below for this week.)

1. History - The Inca Civilisation
  • Read the attached Power Point on The Inca Civilisation.
  • Explore the website attached: https://incas.mrdonn.org/ . Underneath "For Kids", read 3 other topics of your choice!
  • In your SESE copy, list 5 facts about the Inca Civilisation, and list 5 similiarities/differences between the Inca Civilisation and the Mayan Civilisation.

2. Maths - Virtual Sports Day Activity (Length)
  • Using your knowledge of length, create a 20 meter obstacle course outside.
  • How might you measure 20 metres? Think back to when we were learning about length... Did we create anything that might help us measure a metre? If your garden is shorter than 50 metres, how can you make the obstacle course? Can you curve the course? This can be recorded on your family "Sports Day Planner"! I would love to see videos of you trying out your own obstacle course! You can upload the video to Seesaw if you wish!

3. English - Creative Writing - Letter/Persuasive
  • Imagine you are a Commoner of the Inca Civilisation. You are very angry at the Sapa Inca (The Head of Government of the Inca Civilisation) because you have no freedom! You cannot even go out for a walk without their permission! Write a letter to the Sapa Inca. Explain what you do not like about being a Commoner, and why you think your lack of freedom is unfair. Maybe you could suggest changing the rules, or give ideas of alternative rules which would make your life more enjoyable!

4. Art - Inca Metal Tooling/Lego Temple
  • The Inca were wonderful craftspeople, and often used metal, gold and silver to create beautiful art pieces, masks, and jewellery. See pictures attached below of examples of beautiful Inca-inspired metal pieces! Explore this website for even more examples: https://www.ancient.eu/Inca_Art/
  • What do you notice about the Metal artwork? What designs do you see?
  • Using ordinary tin foil (found in your kitchen, with your parent's permission), use the blunt end of a pencil or paintbrush to create your own Inca Metal Tooling piece! You are free to do any design you would like! See the video attached below of how I began to create an Inca Metal Tooling mask.
OR
  • Create an Inca Temple from Lego! How high and wide can you build it? (Lego might be another clue to our Virtual School Tour!)

Friday - Virtual School Tour Day! (I will post the Virtual School Tour on Friday! It's a surprise!) YAY! Have you guessed where we might be going?

Enjoy this week's work, Fifth Class! It is sad that we cannot have our usual Sports Day and School Tour but I hope you get some enjoyment from the activities this week!

Miss you all!
