Mon 22nd - Friday 26th June

To all of 4th class,
This is my last time writing to you. I want to begin by saying how lucky I felt to be teaching you this year. You were a fun, enthusiastic class and I hope you will still say hello to me when you are in 5th class. Your new teacher will be very lucky to have you!
Thank you for all the work you sent on via email and Seesaw. Many  of you spent a lot of time on maths. This will be an enormous help when you are in 5th. I loved seeing your projects and your beautiful art work. It was great to hear about you doing other activities like baking and playing outside. Don’t worry about the work you found difficult or were unable to complete. Teachers understand this and will be doing lots of revision in the autumn term.
Your parents will be collecting your books etc this week and they will be returning the book rental. Can you take some responsibility for this? Help to check everything is returned and make sure it is in the same condition you received it. If anything is lost or damaged just let the school know. I have included art work in the bag you will be receiving but I will have to give you  back your  masks in September as they don’t have your names on them.
The plan of work looks a little different this week partly because it is our last week, partly because you will be returning the book rental and also because there are some important life skills you may need to be reminded of.
Maths:
Complete pupil profile assessment booklet for the Busy at Maths. This is in the bag your parents will be collecting. It will give you an idea of the areas in maths you find tricky and you can congratulate yourself on  all that you have learnt. I have included the answer booklet on the blog this week.
Do a maths trail around your home. There is one you could try but you could create one for yourself or for a younger sibling to attempt.

Cross Curricular Work:
Water/Road /Farm Safety:
https://www.gov.ie/en/publication/7f3dab-water-safety/

http://www.agrikids.ie/safety-circle.php

Have a look at the links online and the information sheets. With this in mind there are a range of activities around the topic of safety I have included for you to try. You can design a poster, do the road safety crossword, try the farm safety quiz and see if you can spot the dangers in the pictures.
Handwashing:
Watch this video to make sure you are washing your hands properly. This will be especially important when we return to school. You could make a poster to display in the school when we return.
 https://www.safefood.eu/Food-Safety/Steps-to-handwashing.aspx

PE:
You might find it fun to try this active schools week .

Thank you and I hope you have a lovely summer,
Mrs Halpin

School Closure Work 15th-19th June

Hello again 4th class. Thank you for all the work you sent back on Seesaw.   Only two weeks of home schooling to go and then we will be on our summer holidays. As always I have planned out lots of work for the week but while I want you to do your best it is ok if you do not complete all of it. The Busy at Maths is probably the work to spend most time doing and whatever you can fit in after that fine.

Maths :
Busy at Maths:
  •  Chapter 32 Area: See tutorials 104-107 A practical activity that could be fun to try could be to draw a square metre on the ground outside using chalk and a measuring tape.
  • Chapter 33 Capacity: See tutorials 108-109 If you understood chapter 27 on the kilometre and the chapter on weight, it works in the same way. Remember 1000m = 1km 1000g= 1 kg and 1000ml = 1 L. If you are doing the problem solving on p167 just be careful to convert all numbers in the sum to the units required in the answer and put your decimal points directly under each other.       When you are baking ask your parent can you measure out the liquid in the measuring jug.
  • Chapter 34 Number Sentences: You could play the mystery number game say “I am thinking of a number. I add 4. My answer is 12 “ for example.

Gaeilge :

If you go to FolensOnline.ie you can access our Gaeilge programme Abair Liom F. Go to FolensOnline.ie and click register. Select teacher. Fill in a username, email and password. For Roll Number use the code Prim20. Once you have an account you can click on the “resources” part of the Abair Liom F and access all the stories, games songs and poems.

  • “Ag an Aerfort” L156-163. Try to listen to the story, chat and the “Ar Saoire” poem as many days as you can. Play the vocabulary game that accompanies the poster. Talk to your family in Irish if possible .It doesn’t have to be perfect.  Éist leis an scéal, an comhrá  agus an dán. Imir an cluiche. If you feel you could attempt any of the written follow up please do. If not do not worry it will still improve your Irish just listening to the online resources.

  •  Cúla 4: Have a look if you have time at TG4’s version of RTE’s Homeschool Hub. It is on TG4 at 10am. https://www.cula4.com/en/

English:
Write a poem about lockdown and how you have spent the past few months! Your poem can take any shape you like, but here are some ideas:

ACROSTIC
L
O
C
K
D
O
W
N
LIMERICK
The sound of a Limerick is so distinctive: two longer lines, two short ones, and a closing longer line that makes a joke!

Dixon Lanier Merritt:
A wonderful bird is the pelican,
His bill can hold more than his beli-can.
He can take in his beak
Food enough for a week
But I’m damned if I see how the heli-can.

FREE VERSE
In free verse, there are no rules! You don’t use regular patterns of rhythm or rhyme or lines of any particular length. Yes, you can do whatever you want…which means it can be hard to know where to start. But give it a go!

  • Read every day. Keep a copy and dictionary beside you. Note down any new words and look up their meaning.
  • Spelling Journal: Learn and complete sentences for week.
  • Continue your own free writing copy. Refer to ideas on our class sheet
  • One page of handwriting
  • Away with Words: P70 “Compound Words” A-C (Answers only)

Religion:
  • Grow In Love :trial@growinlove.ie   password: growinlove
  • Grow in Love Textbook Theme “God forgives us” P82-84

Art:
Do a picture of your two favourite items that you’ve been using at home since school closed. You can use any type of material you like to do this – chalk, pencil, paint, watercolour etc. These can be 2- D or you can challenge yourself to make them 3-D! One idea is to do an observational pencil drawing of your bicycle. Do you remember how we did an observational drawing of your shoe? You could take out your bicycle and draw exactly what you see.

SPHE:

School Closure Work 8th- 12th June 2020

Dear parents,
The book rental will be collected in school the week beginning 22nd June. The priority over the next two weeks is to work on the main concepts in the final chapters of the Busy at Maths. In senior classes teachers always find it challenging to complete the maths curriculum for their year group. While I am suggesting working on a number of chapters in maths this week and next needless to say, it is only necessary to attempt a couple from each section and focus on what is beneficial for your child.
As you may be aware, last week some classes trialled an app called Seesaw, which can be used as a means of communication between school and home. This week Seesaw will also be an option for sending back work in 4th class. I am aware that it is late in the academic year to be introducing this new initiative so please   do not feel under any obligation to use this method. The aim is for the school to assess the pros and cons of such a system as we may wish to or need to implement it in the next school year. I will be in touch with you individually via email which will explain Seesaw in more detail and give you a code which you will need should you choose to engage. Of course you are still welcome to stay in touch and send work via email.
Thank you for your support,
Clodagh Halpin.

The Busy at Maths is probably the work to spend most time doing and whatever you can fit in after that fine.

Maths :
  • Busy at Maths:  Chapter 29 Division . Start on p145 Q2 and attempt p146.
Tutorial 99 and the example above Q2 show you the short method to divide and this is what we worked on in class. There is no need to try the longer methods shown earlier in chapter.
  • Chapter 30 Check that you understand division is the opposite of multiplication.
  • The “quick look back” on p152 could be a useful way of checking what you know.
  • Chapter 31 Weight: If you understood chapter 27 on the kilometre it works in the same way. Remember 1000g= 1 kg and 1000ml = 1 L. I would attempt this chapter as a lot of children find decimals and fractions confusing but it gets easier with practice.

English:
  • Creative Writing : Topic - THE SEA
Paragraphs – A paragraph is a group of sentences that relate to one main idea. When you want to describe another main idea, start a new paragraph.
Visualising – When you are writing a paragraph or story, close your eyes and imagine that you are in the place where the events of your story are taking place. You should see the setting, hear the sounds and notice the smells, touches and tastes.
Write some additional words describing what each sense might detect:
See: e.g. glittering / murky _______________________
Hear: e.g. faint / deafening _______________________
Smell: e.g. burning / spicy   _______________________
Touch: e.g. hard / smooth _______________________
Taste: e.g. bitter / salty _______________________
Visualise a story called The Fiery Mermaid at the Seashore. Complete the answers below with your own words.
  1. What do you see? E.g. Waves rolling gently …
  2. What do you hear? E.g. water lapping against the sand …
  3. What do you smell / touch / taste? …
  4. How do you feel? …
Write the first paragraph and use all the above supporting details to describe the scene. Draw your ‘mental picture’.

School Closure Work  4th class  Tuesday 2nd –Thursday 4th June (Yipee only 3 Days! Monday bank holiday, Friday meant to have been school tour)

Congratulations 4th class. You have been awarded the prize of the best class ever! We have won an all expenses paid trip for three nights to London!!!! But I need you to organise the trip for me! The following is the work I am setting for you next week. I think you will find it fun and there is a lot to be learnt even though you won’t be opening your usual school books. Can you spot which subjects you are covering? As always do the best you can. You’ll not complete everything. Keep in touch. My email is chalpin65@gmail.com.
  • Price and book the return flights. Which airport are we flying into? There is a choice.
  • Research the accommodation. Are you going to share a room with your friends?
  • Plan the itinerary. By that I mean what places of interest should, we visit when we get there. We will be in London for four days so I would say six locations max or we will be exhausted! Would you like to go to Harry Potter World? There are lots of museums and a zoo. I’ve included photos and information about the famous landmarks you might like to see.
  • Play the London landmarks fact matching game with your family.
  • At the end of each day we will be very hungry. I have included a menu template for you to plan your own menu. What will you order? How much will it cost altogether?
  • There are also some postcards you can print off and write.
  • We will be travelling on the London underground. I need your help to find our way round. Have a look at the map. See if you can answer the questions.
  • There is a school tour writing template for you to do some narrative writing about the trip.
  • For your art, you can draw a famous London landmark. I think I would choose Big Ben. Have a look at the photos I’ve sent you.

Have fun,
Mrs Halpin

VIRTUAL SPORT’S DAY 2020 – Check out the school website for our Virtual Sport’s Day! Take plenty of pictures and send them to my gmail
Apologies 4th class I know I put up a different version of the virtual sports day on my blog last week than the version the school has put on our website .
