Welcome to our SET Blog!

Picture
Our Special Education Teachers (SET Team) are here to help you with remote learning!
Our Special Education Teachers will be in contact with the parents/guardians of any children who have been receiving additional support in literacy or numeracy this year to discuss the format of remote teaching and learning that will be most effective for each student.  If your child avails of support in literacy and/or numeracy from any member of the SET team (Mrs. Johnston, Mrs. Donnelly or Ms. Fahy) and requires assistance at any stage during these weeks of lockdown, please get in contact with your child's SET teacher through the appropriate email or by using Seesaw.
  • Mrs. Johnston:   mjohnston@kilkerleyns.ie
  • Mrs. Donnelly:   cdonnelly@kilkerleyns.ie
  • Ms. Fahy:    afahy@kilkerleyns.ie
We have some lovely resources for you to use with your child to support their learning over the next few weeks.  These are divided into literacy, numeracy and typing.  Suggested class levels are also included.

Any children who had been receiving extra help with maths can use the resources and websites listed below to support their learning.  There are also many ways in which your child can practise their maths skills in real life, such as telling the time, measuring, baking/cooking and designing and making things at home etc.  The maths websites below focus on various areas of the maths curriculum.

For literacy, a great way to develop skills is to read, read and read some more.  This can include books, comics, magazines, online articles or any written form that is of interest to your child.  The emphasis should be on enjoyment.  The literacy websites below focus on phonics, sight words and comprehension.

The typing websites include more games based approach for younger children and a more formal approach for older children.

Also be sure to check out the information that has already been put on the Class Seesaw and Class Blogs for more ideas.

Wellbeing

Here is a lovely free resource for children on the theme of wellbeing while at home. It comes in the form of a journal with activities based around themes such as kindness, feeling positive emotions, happy memories, breathing, dealing with worries and being brave. It may be especially useful for children who are coping with anxious feelings during this time.

This social story - Getting Ready to go to the Test Centre is a useful resource for helping children understand the Corona virus and the testing procedure in a non-frightening way. It is particularly suited to children with ASD and/or young children.

Graded Reading

The website below has excellent reading resources and graded ebooks with comprehension activities that can be used at home.  To be able to access these resources, you will need to register.  Then your child can do an informal reading and comprehension test to figure out which level of reader suits them best.  Once you start reading at the level suggested, you will know it is the correct level if your child knows approximately 90% of the words.  You can choose a different level if you find the one you have started on is too easy or too difficult at any stage.

Sight Words

The Fry Words are the 1000 most common words found in the books that we read.  These are divided into ten lists of 100 words each and can be used with children who are building their sight word vocabulary.  While the child reads through the columns of words, the words that they do not recognise can be the focus of their practice until they are known.  We recommend learning five words at a time.  Please find the link to these words, as well as some useful activities below.

https://sightwords.com/sight-words/fry/

A more basic set of words that may be suited to younger children are the Dolch Words.  The same ideas apply here.  Below is a link to these words and activities.

Spelling Resources for SET

The SNIP Programme puts the focus on learning to spell words that are met very often.  There are three levels in this programme and each list comes with a look, say, cover, write, check activity as well as other reinforcement tasks to complete.  The links to the worksheets for the three levels are included below.
