Monday March 30th

Picture
Morning everyone,

Hope you and your families are all keeping safe and well.  I know it can be difficult to remember with all that’s going on that Easter is approaching so some of the activities this week have an Easter theme to try and lift the spirits!

Maths:
  • Continue working on in Master Your Maths, as far as the end of Week 26.  Also use this opportunity to go back and complete any days you may have missed out on during the year.
  • There are lots of links to maths games for 5th and 6th on the main school blog which are great for revision.

English:
  • I have attached the poem ‘I See His Blood Upon the Rose’, by Joseph Plunkett.  Read the poem and complete the questions underneath.
  • The link below will bring you to the first two chapters in the novel The Guns of Easter, a story about Jimmy a young boy who finds himself caught up in events during The 1916 Rising.  Read the first two chapters and write a newspaper report on living conditions in Dublin at the time.

  • If you would like to read the whole novel you can borrow the book online for free with archive.org below.  You must create your own account first.
https://archive.org/details/gunsofeaster00whel
  • Continue work on your spellings – this is the last week in your Spelling Journal for this term.  Complete your spelling activities for the week in your homework copy- or you can email them to the class email- sixthclass@kilkerleyns.ie
  • I have included some comprehension activities on Easter at the bottom of this post for anybody that may find the activities above too much of a challenge.  Just like in class we all work at different levels so choose whichever one suits you best.

Friday March 27th

Hi Everyone!
Hope you’re all keeping well and enjoying the beautiful sunshine.

For anyone that might be finding the work in Small World a little challenging I have added some activities on the same topic of plants below.  You can read them online and answer the questions orally or download them.  The answers are included.

Boys and girls that go to Mrs Donnelly, Mrs Johnston or Ms Fahy there are lots of great ideas on the SET blog on this website.  To practice reading you might like to take a look at is the Oxford Owl website.
https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/?view=image&query=&type=book&age_group=Age+9-11&level=&level_select=&book_type=&series=#
There are lots of free online books to read.

On Monday I will upload the answers to the Titanic Maths Challenge and the answers to the first week of Master Your Maths.

Talk to you all on Monday,
Keep safe,
Ms Condron

Wednesday March 25th

Morning Everyone,

Hope you are all keeping safe and well.

With the beautiful weather and spring in the air it’s a great opportunity to get outdoors for some learning in the garden.

In your Small World Geography and Science read Unit 4 on Plants and try to complete some of the following activities as well as the written activities on the unit.  For anyone that was absent on the last day you can access the Small World books through the CJ fallon website
To access CJFallon's books online:
1. Go to my.cjfallon.ie
2. Click on 'Student Resources'
3. Select class level, subject and book
4. View online book by clicking on the eye icon

Read Pg.21 – Find 6 plants-anything that grows not necessarily a flower- in your garden/ around your house (they don’t have to be mentioned on Pg.21)
  • Can you name them?  If not try researching to find out their names and some facts about them.

Read Pg. 22 – Watch some videos about plant and animal life in the rainforest
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9MV5CgPgIQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEsV5rqbVNQ

Read Pg. 23- Pull up some weeds in your garden.  Can you identify the parts of the plant mentioned on Pg. 23- look out for the roots especially!

Read Pgs. 24 and 25- perhaps you might like to try some planting of your own.  It’s a great time of year to plant potatoes – follow the experiment on Pg. 24 to help you out.

Here are some related websites if you’d like to do some research of your own:
www.rain-tree.com/facts.htm#.UcdSnhROPPQ –Secrets of the tropical rainforest
www.irishwildflowers.ie Wildflowers of Ireland
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ze8NV7cvW8k Video showing phototropism in action
www.botanicgardens.ie/ Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin.

After completing the unit, choose one or more of the following pieces of writing:
  1. Write an explanation about ‘How plants grow’
  2. Write a recount about ‘A Day in the Garden’
  3. Write a narrative that begins with ‘I spotted something moving in the gap between the hedge and the old cherry blossom tree……’
  4. Today scientists can genetically modify crops to make them disease resistant and climate tolerant, and to enhance the flavour and increase the yield.  Many environmentalists worry that there might be long-term effects of genetically modifying crops.  They say we should not interfere with nature.  Write a persuasive piece outlining you thoughts.
  5. Grandparents are often a great source of information when it comes to gardening.  You could use this as an opportunity to give them a call to discuss what you have learned, ask their advice and create a list of top gardening tips.

Listen to some the following track (or all of it if you like!).  You might like to use it as an opportunity to take some time out to relax or use it as inspiration to create a piece of artwork or even to create a piece of Stop Motion on the topic.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kb8CW3axqRE

  • Be sure to continue on with the next week in Master Your Maths- if anyone would like to correct the answers from the previous week email me and I can send them on to you.
  • You can finish reading Reaching The Heights. I hope you’re enjoying it; it’s always one of my favourites in sixth class.  Once complete do a book review on the novel- there are lots of templates on Twinkl if you’d like to download one or you can simply use them as a guide. https://www.twinkl.ie/search
  • Finally in Gaeilge you can access Abair Liom through the Folens website.  The steps are laid out on the school blog page.  Our next unit was ‘An Teilifís’ if you want to continue work on that.  You could also host your own ‘Cupán agus Comhrá’ at home for your family.  Or you could also create your own song using Coláiste Lurgan as inspiration
https://lurgan.biz/tg-lurgan/

As I’ve said before if you have any questions you can email me on the sixth class email address.  Try your best with any of the work given and make sure to get plenty of physical activity in during the day too- even if that means the odd Tik Tok dance move thrown in here and there!

Missing you all,

Ms Condron
