Week Starting May 18th

Morning everybody!
Hope you’re all going to tune into The School Hub this week!

This week our theme is World War One, as there is so much to study in this area we will spread it over two weeks.  Keep up the great work, I know I keep repeating the fact that any hard work you put in now is in preparation for first year but it’s true!  As always try your best.

SPHE:
In the third lesson of our Transition Programme we are looking at homework, equipment and rules.  (All the fun stuff!)  There’s a lot to take in and it’s completely normal to feel a little nervous about these topics, remember if you do have any worries talking to your parents or an older brother or sister can often put your mind at ease.  Both the presentation and activity sheet are attached below.  If you can’t print out the activities you can answer them in your copy.

English:
  • Reading- Read the story The Hands that Built America Pg. 232 in Racing Ahead and complete activities on Pgs 236 and 237
  • Spellings- Continue with your spelling sheet.  For each word write a definition, put all twenty words in alphabetical order and choose ten to put into a sentence.
  •  The book War Horse by Michael Morpurgo, recounts the story of Joey, a horse, purchased by the Army for service in WWI.  You can listen to the audio version here:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/english-ks2-war-horse-michael-morpurgo/zmpwbdm
Perhaps take the first three episodes this week – each episode is about 15mins long.  Listening to the audio book is also a really great example of how to read with expression.
  • Handwriting- continue work in your handwriting books
  • Free Writing- choose one of the following:
  1. Write a persuasive piece on ‘The role women played in World War One was just as important as the role men played’.
  2. Write a letter (recount) as a soldier writing home to describe conditions in the trenches.
  3. Write a narrative piece that starts with the line ‘My breathing got heavier and my heart rate increased as I stood there waiting for the moment when we would be instructed to go over the top.’
  • Writing –Keep up the super work on report writing.  This week you can choose to write an information report on a topic of your choice.  Remember to use a plan.  If you are writing about an animal or a country you can download one of the planning templates below but the choice of topic is yours!

Maths:
  • Master Your Maths- This week look back and check have you any days left to complete – keep working on with the Friday tests.  I’ll upload answers from week 30 tomorrow.  At the end of the month I’ll upload the answers for the Friday Tests, this will give everyone a chance to catch up with them.
  • In Busy at Maths this week we will be learning about Area Pgs. 125-128.  I will upload a separate blog post for each part to explain in more detail and some extra sheets for practice as there are a limited number of examples in the book.
  • Crack the Code- Morse code was used to communicate messages during WWI.  It is made up of dots and dashes so if a message was intercepted by the enemy they would not be able to understand what the message was.  Can you decode the messages below?

Gaeilge:
  • Spellings- This week we are looking at a short poem about May flowers. Use your dictionary to help with translation of the dictation.
  • Abair Liom- Continue our theme of ‘An Aimsir’, in Abair Liom.  As always you can access the resources for the unit on the folens website.  They are really great as just like in class the stories and comhrá  are read aloud for you to follow in your book.
  • Cúla 4/ TG4- féach ar réamhaisneis na haimsire
  • Gramadach- Irish Verbs Made Easy Workbook- this week we are revising the Type 1 regular verbs on Pg. 16.  Use your learning journal and yellow grammar book to help out and the previous pages in your Verbs Made Easy Workbook.

SESE:
  • This week and next week we are studying World War One in our Small World History.  It’s a huge topic area so we will only read Pgs. 48-50 and answer the activities on Pg. 50
