Week Starting Monday April 20th

Morning everybody!

Hope you are all keeping safe and well and enjoyed the beautiful sunshine over the Easter break.  I know it’s disappointing that we haven’t returned to school yet however it’s important that you all recognise that although it can be difficult the efforts you are putting in are helping save lives.

This week your families will be invited to collect some more of your books and copies from the school so work suggestions for the coming week will rely less on needing a computer.  You do of course have the option of completing any of the activities or assignments online and emailing them to me for feedback or sending on photos of your work to sixthclass@kilkerleyns.ie.  It’s fantastic to see the work that you have been putting in since we finished up in March.

English:
  • Reading- Read the story The Red Cube Pg. 190 in Racing Ahead and complete activities on Pgs 198-199
  • Independent reading- this time is such a wonderful opportunity to curl up on the couch or in a sunny spot with a book of your choice or maybe read a story for a younger family member.  There are also great audio books available if you’d like to listen to a story instead.  For example David Walliams  is doing a free audio story each day from The World’s Worst Children.

  • Grammar for this week is revision of quotation marks.  If you need to revise what quotation marks are you can check out the video below, or as well as the activity in Racing Ahead you can play the following game for practice:

  • Spellings- as we have finished the spelling programme for sixth class in each bundle of books you will find stapled sheets with spellings/vocabulary work for the next number of weeks. The words are based on new vocabulary in your Racing Ahead story or new vocabulary from History/Geography.  For each word write a definition, put all twenty words in alphabetical order and choose ten each week to put into a sentence.
  • Handwriting- continue work in your handwriting books- maybe try and complete two pages each week.
  • Writing – We are moving on to a new genre of writing this month – Report writing.
This week we will look at the layout of a Report, examples of report writing and brainstorm ideas to write our own report.  I will upload a separate blog post to focus on this so you can access it more easily.  Be sure to check on Imagine Forest for free writing assignments too.

Maths:
  • Master Your Maths- continue with week 27 in your book.  I’ll upload answers from week 26 tomorrow.
  • This week we will be looking at ‘Equations and Variables’ in Busy at Maths Pgs. 101-104.  I will upload a separate blog post for each page - one page per day- to explain in more detail however if you feel confident to work through them before I post feel free.  I will upload answers for each page on Friday for self-correction.
Gaeilge:
  • Spellings- In each bundle of books your Irish spellings for the coming weeks are included.  This week we are looking at ‘p’ and ‘ph’ words. Apologies on sentence 7 this week change lesi to leis–it should be ‘leis an gceamara seo’.  Use your dictionary to help with translation of the dictation.
  • Abair Liom- Continuing our theme of ‘An Teilifís’, this month.  The Abair Liom resources are all available for free on the Folensonline website- details of how to log on are in the blog post from March 25th.  I’ve included our Foclóir agus Frásaí for the topic to download below.
  • Cúla4- You could watch some cartoons and programmes on TG4.  Also Cúla4 Ar Scoil begins this morning at 10am if you’d like to tune in- it is for pupils attending Gaelscoileanna so don’t be disheartened if you find it a little challenging.

  • Gramadach- I have sent home your Leabhar Bán Gramadach/Irish Verbs Made Easy Workbook- this week we continue with Pgs 12 and 13.  Use your learning journal and yellow grammar book to help out.
Remember in the future tense Type one verbs:
  1. broad endings are – faidh and faimid (for we)
  2. slender endings are- fidh and fimid (for we)

History:
  • Read Unit 12 in your Small World History Pg. 66-71 The Irish Free State.  Complete activities on Pgs. 69 and 71.  If you log on to the cjfallon website and create an account you can access lots of excellent videos, photographs and websites for free to help with this topic.
https://my.cjfallon.ie/dashboard/student-resources/?levels=0&classes=0&subjects=0&serieses=0&booktitles=0&types%5B0%5D=Book+Sample
  • Some other useful websites on the topic:
https://esbarchives.ie/2015/06/17/shannon-scheme-video/ A video on the Shannon Scheme for the Electrification of the Irish Free State
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Griffith Information about Arthur Griffith
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._T._Cosgrave Information about William T Cosgrave
  • Watch the film Michael Collins with your parents.  Use the information to write a report or create a slide show presentation.  Remember however film adaptations aren't always 100% accurate some parts are added for the viewers entertainment!

Art:
  • Design a poster illustrating three of the achievements of Cumann na nGaedheal
  • Draw or paint a scene from the Civil War
  • Design a poster encouraging people to vote for Cumann na nGaedheal
  • Make a bobble head panda https://www.artycraftykids.com/craft/3d-bobble-head-panda-craft-for-kids-to-make/
  • Learn how to sketch a panda or lots of other animals https://how2drawanimals.com/8-animals/35-draw-panda.html
  • Create a chalk drawing of a Giant Panda https://www.deepspacesparkle.com/chengdu-panda-bear-art-project/

Geography:
  • Locate the following places mentioned in Unit 12 of your History on Google Maps:
The Four Courts Co. Dublin
Béal na mBláth Co. Cork
Ardnacrusha Co. Clare
  • What event in Unit 12 happened at each location?  Why do you think these were the locations of each event?
  • We are researching the Giant Panda in writing, the Giant Panda is the national symbol of China, can you find the symbols of ten other countries?  Why do you think the country chose these symbols?

PE:
  • There are lots of fantastic tips and drills for basketball skills on the Primary Schools Mini Basketball channel on YouTube.   Check out some of the activities below:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_GZhdMbp1k – Ball handling
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mp1RR_52ZN8 – Dribbling
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azNXIN-6NAs - Passing

As I’ve said before don’t feel like you must complete all of these activities, do what you can, remember you all work in different ways.  Perhaps there’s a topic you’ve spotted in one of your books that you think would be interesting to complete or a theme you’ve always wanted to research instead, by all means go for it!  I would recommend however getting into the routine of doing a little school work each day to give the day some structure and remember to factor in some physical activity each day too.

If you have any questions you can email me on sixthclass@kilkerleyns.ie
Missing you all,
Ms Condron
