Week starting Monday April 27th

Morning everybody!

I can’t believe it’s the last week of April already.  Hope you’re all keeping safe and well.  Keep up the great work again this week!

English:
  • Reading- Read the story The Dark Triangle Pg. 200 in Racing Ahead and complete activities on Pgs 210- 211
  • Independent reading- take some quiet time to yourself and escape into the world of a book
  • Grammar for this week is general revision of nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, prepositions and conjunctions.  As well as the activity in Racing Ahead you can play the following games for practice:
https://www.gamestolearnenglish.com/prepositions-game/ Prepositions
http://www.eslgamesworld.com/members/games/grammar/wheel/conjunctions_wheel.html Conjunctions
https://www.softschools.com/language_arts/grammar/pronoun/balloon_game/ Pronouns

  • Spellings- Continue with your spelling sheet.  For each word write a definition, put all twenty words in alphabetical order and choose ten to put into a sentence.
  • Handwriting- continue work in your handwriting books
  • Writing – Well done on the information report writing last week.  It was really excellent!  This week using our Geography write a report on the country Greece.  I’ve attached a planning template below if you’d like to download it but feel free to choose your own subheadings for description this week.

Maths:
  • Master Your Maths- continue with week 28 in your book.  I’ll upload answers from week 27 tomorrow.
  • This week we will be continuing ‘Equations and Variables’ in Busy at Maths Pgs. 105-106.  We will only cover two pages this week as it’s more challenging and I want to make sure everyone fully understands it before moving on.  Like last week I will upload a separate blog post for each part to explain in more detail.  I hope the Live Board videos are working OK. I will upload answers for each page on Friday for self-correction.

Gaeilge:
  • Spellings- This week we are looking at ‘s’, and ‘sh’ words. Use your dictionary to help with translation of the dictation.
  • Abair Liom- Continuing our theme of ‘An Teilifís’, this month.  The Abair Liom resources are all available for free on the Folensonline website- details of how to log on are in the blog post from March 25th.  You can access the Focail agus Frasaí for the topic in last week’s blog post.
  • Cúla4 and TG4 – did you tune into Cúla4 Scoil last week?  On the TG4 website you can access lots of great programmes.  This week I’d recommend the programme Aifric about a 14yr old girl and her family that have just moved to the west of Ireland, think you might enjoy it.  There are subtitles!
https://www.tg4.ie/en/player/online-boxsets/?series=Aifric&genre=Cula4
  • Gramadach- Irish Verbs Made Easy Workbook- this week we continue with Pg 13.  Use your learning journal and yellow grammar book to help out.
Remember in the future tense Type one verbs:
  1. broad endings are – faidh and faimid (for we)
  2. slender endings are- fidh and fimid (for we)

Geography:
  • Read Unit 12 in your Small World Geography Pg. 67-71 72 Greece.  Complete activities on Pgs. 69 and 71.  If you log on to the cjfallon website and create an account you can access lots of excellent videos, photographs and websites for free to help with this topic.
https://my.cjfallon.ie/dashboard/student-resources/?levels=0&classes=0&subjects=0&serieses=0&booktitles=0&types%5B0%5D=Book+Sample
  • Other activity ideas:
Design a menu for a Greek restaurant using information in the unit.
Research Greek recipes and cook some Greek food
Create a tourist brochure to attract visitors to Greece
Plan a holiday in Greece- Where would you go?  What would you do?
  • Some other useful websites on the topic:
https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/explore/countries/greece/ Information about Greece
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z87tn39 Ancient Greece facts
http://www.ancientgreece.co.uk/acropolis/home_set.html Information about the Acropolis

History:
  • We couldn’t have a unit that mentions Ancient Greece without taking a trip down memory lane:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CoYuI6TtLGo  Look how young you all look!
  • Using the history of the Olympics as inspiration research the history of a sporting organistaion, a sports event or a sports team -anything from Dundalk FC, to Wimbeldon to the NBA the choice is yours.
Ask yourself:
  1. When were they formed?
  2. Who founded them? Why?
  3. How did they look at first and how have they change and developed over the years?
  • Anyone interested in researching the GAA? Unit 7 of Small World History looks at it’s formation.

Art:
  • Using card or clay, design and make a model of a famous Greek landmark such as the Parthenon, the Meteora, Paestrumor the Temple of Olympian Zeus.
  • Give some of your clay garden pots a Greek make over https://littlecrunchy.com/2012/06/greek-pottery-homeschool-project.html
  • Crown the winners of your home Olympics with an olive crown https://www.education.com/activity/article/make-olympic-wreath/
  • Create an Olympic torch to start proceedings https://www.ohmy-creative.com/kids-crafts/glowing-tea-light-olympic-torch/ Be careful the tea light in this is NOT a candle it’s a battery operated tea light!
PE:
  • Host your own Olympic Games in your garden.  You could challenge your family to try out events such as relay races, table tennis, keep-ups, shooting nerf guns, throwing paper planes etc.  There are lots more creative ideas below:
https://blog.kidadl.com/articles/host-own-olympic-games

Religion:
  • Grow in Love -Continue to Theme 8 Eucharist, Lesson 1 At Mass We Give Thanks.  The Big Question this week is very appropriate for the times that are in it 'What is the best gift that money can't buy?'.  Remember you can log on to the Grow in Love website to access any resources.

As I’ve said before don’t feel like you must complete all of these activities, do what you can, remember you all work in different ways.  It’s fantastic to see all the great work on the class email.  Remember if you want to photograph anything and send it on please do!  Or you can share your work on Google docs.

If you have any questions you can email me on sixthclass@kilkerleyns.ie

Have a good week,
Ms Condron
