Work for week starting May 25th

Morning everybody!

Last week of May, it’s hard to believe!  Thanks again to everyone who has sent on work either through photographs, PDFs, sharing work on Google Docs and slides, playing Kahoots or completing Imagine Forest assignments. Not only is it fantastic to see how you’re getting on with the activities but it also means I can give you some positive feedback on a job well done.  Even if it’s only a few of your favourite pieces of work from the week try, if you can, to send something on, that way I know you’re understanding everything ok and I can send you a message back with comments about your work.  Of course you can also email me on sixthclass@kilkerleyns.ie with any questions you have on the activities and I’ll try to help out as best I can.

As always the activities below are suggestions but try your best to do what you can, this is a really great opportunity to get into the habit of independent learning for secondary school and beyond!
Have a great week,
Ms Condron

SPHE:
  • In the fourth lesson of our Transition Programme we are looking at friends and meeting new people. Both the presentation and activity sheet are attached below.  If you can’t print out the activities you can answer them in your copy.
  • Also remember to complete the Profile in your Educational Passport, they should arrive in the post this week, these are being sent on to your secondary school.

English:
  • Reading- Read the story Diaspora Pg. 238-241 in Racing Ahead and complete activities on Pgs 242 and 243
  • Spellings- Continue with your spelling sheet.  For each word write a definition, put all twenty words in alphabetical order and choose ten to put into a sentence.
  • Continue listening to the book War Horse by Michael Morpurgo.   You can listen to the audio version here:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/english-ks2-war-horse-michael-morpurgo/zmpwbdm
Perhaps take the episodes 4-6 this week.  Listening to the audio book is also a really great example of how to read with expression.
  • Handwriting- continue work in your handwriting books
  • Free Writing- choose one of the following:  I have uploaded the three choices as assignments on Imagine Forest too as I know some of you like to use it as a way of sending work on.
  1. Write a persuasive piece on ‘Irish men should have stayed at home to fight for Irish freedom instead of joining the British Army’.
  2. Write a narrative piece, inspired by War Horse, in character as an animal.
  3. Read the poem ’The Connaught Rangers’, attached below.  Write a short paragraph to explain what/who the poet is describing and how she feels.
  • Writing –This is our final week of information report writing.  As I said previously have been so impressed with your work well done.  This week we will be writing a report on WWI- you could choose any of the following titles:
  1. World War One
  2. Life in the trenches during WWI
  3. The role of women during WWI
  4. Life in Ireland during WWI
Below is a planning template for the report on World War One but you can choose any of the titles above.

Maths:
  • Master Your Maths- Continue to look back and check have you any days left to complete – keep working on with the Friday tests.
  • In Busy at Maths this week we will continue with Area and look at finding the area of a circle Pgs. 129-130 and Pg.148-150.  I will upload a separate blog post for each part to explain in more detail, I hope the videos are of some use in helping to explain
Gaeilge:
  • Spellings- This week we are looking at a short story about ‘Scoil Nua’, all about secondary school. Use your dictionary to help with translation of the dictation.
  • Abair Liom- We are moving on to a new theme this week in Abair Liom- Caithemah Aimsire.  I have attached the Foclóir agus Frasaí below along with a sound file to help with pronunciation.  Remember Folens online is a great resource for listening to the stories, comhrá, songs and poems.
  • This week try to record three sentences as Gaeilge about your caitheamh aimsire on video.  If you don’t want to feature on screen you could create an animation.  Any that I receive I’ll put together on video and upload it next week.
  • Gramadach- Irish Verbs Made Easy Workbook- this week we are revising the Type 1 regular verbs on Pg. 17.  Use your learning journal and yellow grammar book to help out and the previous pages in your Verbs Made Easy Workbook.

  1. Create a Google Slides presentation on WWI- use your report to help you with the layout of this.

Art: I loved seeing all of your art work last week, well done!  This week some activity suggestions
  • The poppy was the first flower to bloom on the battle field after war, its red petals became a symbol of the lives that we lost at war.  Create some poppy themed art inspired by the pictures below.
  • In your free writing last week you did a fantastic job of describing the terrible conditions of life in the trenches.  This week can you imagine how those poor soldiers may have looked living there or indeed their distress when they went over the top?  Use the photos below to help.
  • Robbie undertook an amazing project last week transforming a crate into a garden chair.  Can you take an object this week and change what it’s used for or how we see it?
Music:
  • Listen to the song ‘The Green Fields of France’.  What do you think the song is about?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntt3wy-L8Ok

PE:
  • Can you organize a treasure hunt or scavenger hunt for the rest of your family?  Click on the file below for tips on organizing a scavenger hunt.

Other suggested activities:
I understand some of the English activities above are a little challenging.  Below are some alternative activities based on WWI that you could choose instead.  Remember we all work at our own pace, all I ask is that you try your best!
  • I have a short video/powerpoint below about life during WWI.  You can answer the questions orally as you go along.
  • Free Writing:
  1. Write a paragraph about what you think it was like to live during WWI
  2. Write two shopping lists- one for life today and one for life during WWI
  3. Imagine you are a carrier pigeon during WWI- what’s it like?  What messages do you carry?  Who are they for?
  • Read the comprehension on WWI (there are 3 levels of difficulty to choose from) and answer the questions
  • Watch the film War Horse on Netflix
