Work for week starting May 5th

Morning everybody!

Hope you all enjoyed the bank holiday weekend and the beautiful sunshine.  I’m sure you’ve all heard on the news by now that unfortunately we won’t be back to school before the summer.  It’s very disappointing for us all, especially you guys that had so much to look forward to this term.  As Mrs Kirby has said in her letter to you yesterday we hope that when it is safe to do so we will have the opportunity to invite you back for a proper 'Goodbye' and give you the send off you deserve.

SPHE:
You may not be returning to classes in Scoil Mhuire gan Smál but you all still have the big move to secondary school to look forward to this coming September.  For the next few weeks we will be looking at ways to help you prepare for this transition.  Click below for our first lesson.  You can download and print the activities to fill in underneath.

English:
  • Reading- Read the story The Bermuda Triangle Pg. 212 in Racing Ahead and complete activities on Pgs 216 and 217
  • You can watch a video on the mysteries of The Bermuda Triangle here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EInYzXbXwS4
  • Independent reading- there are lots of great mystery stories out there.  Or if you would like to listen to the audio book of Treasure Island you can access it here:
https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/api/digital_books/2330.html
  • Spellings- Continue with your spelling sheet.  For each word write a definition, put all twenty words in alphabetical order and choose ten to put into a sentence.
  • Handwriting- continue work in your handwriting books
  • Writing – Well done on the information report writing last week.  It was really excellent!  This week as we are looking at mysteries, for writing you can choose to write a report on any of the following:  I have included a plan for The Bermuda Triangle below
  1. The Bermuda Triangle
  2. Easter Island
  3. The Loch Ness Monster
  4. The Lost City of Atlantis

Maths:
  • Master Your Maths- continue with week 29 in your book.  I’ll upload answers from week 28 tomorrow.
  • This week we will be continuing ‘Equations and Variables’ in Busy at Maths Pgs. 107-108  Like last week I will upload a separate blog post for each part to explain in more detail. They are a challenge so sick with it, you’re doing great work! I will upload answers for each page on Friday for self-correction.
  • I have attached some mystery stories for you to solve below.  Read the clues to help you work out the answers. They vary in difficulty so choose the one that suits you best.

Gaeilge:
  • Spellings- This week we are looking at ‘Ag Campáil’. Use your dictionary to help with translation of the dictation.
  • Abair Liom- We would be moving on to our theme of ‘An Aimsir’, in Abair Liom.  Maybe try to record your own ‘Réamhaisnéis na haimsire’.
  • Cúla 4/ TG4- choose two programmes to watch on the TG4 palyer- there’s lots of variety on therefrom cartoons, to sports, to the news, to travel programmes the choice is yours.
  • Gramadach- Irish Verbs Made Easy Workbook- this week we continue with Pg 14.  Use your learning journal and yellow grammar book to help out.  We’re looking at the question and negative forms of the Aimsir Fháistineach. I will upload a video in a separate post to help explain this.

Geography and History:

  • As we are looking at mysteries this week for Geography and History do some research on the following places and fill in the fact sheet attached below.
  • Loch Ness:

  • Nazca Lines:

Art:
  • Create your own Nazca lines from sand and paint
https://spanishmama.com/nazca-lines-craft-kids/
  • Many sceptics believe that the explanations given for the disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle are just ‘conspiracy theories’ and therefore should not be taken seriously.  There are conspiracy theories about many events for which satisfactory explanations have not been found.  Two such theories are :
The Apollo moon landings never happened.  They were staged in a Hollywood studio.
A UFO was discovered at Roswell New Mexico in July 1947.
Create your own short video ‘staging’, a moon landing or UFO sighting.
  • Fascinated by the UFO theory?  Learn how to draw (some very cute) aliens here:
https://artprojectsforkids.org/how-to-draw-aliens/
  • Make your own Easter Island heads with papier-mâché.  This is quite a big project but would look amazing once complete!
 https://www.instructables.com/id/Outdoor-Paper-Mache-Easter-Island-Head/

PE:
  • Here’s a challenge to take our Daily Run to the next level: Can you run a marathon before the end of the term?  Not all in the one day though!!   There are 42km in a marathon, download the sheet attached at the bottom and you can mark off each kilometer you run between now and June 26th. Good luck!

Religion:
  • Grow in Love- Theme 8 Lesson 2 – At Mass We Remember Jesus’ Sacrifice. Pg. 86-89

As I’ve said before don’t feel like you must complete all of these activities, do what you can, remember you all work in different ways.  It's also important to remember that although you won't be returning to class this work is all good preparation for second level.  I

It’s fantastic to see all the great work on the class email.  Remember if you want to photograph anything and send it on please do!  Or share your work on Google docs.

If you have any questions you can email me on sixthclass@kilkerleyns.ie

Have a good week,
Ms Condron
